Summer is here!

The sun has finally made an appearance and we’ve been out making the most of it. Of course, we’re not just fair weather runners. We’re a hardy bunch and rain or shine we love to get out there and run. Our members recent excellent performance in the Frostbite Friendly winter league certainly showed this.

We were delighted to have some of our members take part in the London Marathon in April. Tammy, Mark and Ben put in some serious training to prepare for this fantastic opportunity and went on to successfully complete the course. We’re immensely proud of their achievement, it takes real dedication and months of training to be ready for London.

There are lots of races and events happening at this time of year and we’ve been getting involved both competing and helping to run events. Our runners have competed in several 10k races. Most recently our members were at the fantastic Abbey 10k in Ramsey where our runners and junior runners alike put in some great performances. We’ve also had some great representation in other 10k races in places such as Langtoft, Fen Drayton, Eye, Holt, Broad Oak, Market Deeping and of course Peterborough.

The 5k Grand Prix season is underway and on the 3rd July we organised the event at Ferry Meadows with our very own Arron doing a great job of leading and coordinating our team. We marshalled, gave out numbers and water and everything else it takes to run a successful race. As well as organising a Grand Prix event, we’ve also been taking part in others with members achieving some excellent personal best times!

The Peterborough Green Wheel Relay took place in June. It’s an event where teams of runners complete seven legs of a 45-mile route which takes in Peterborough and the beautiful surrounding countryside. This year we entered four teams of seven runners. Our members also got involved in the event by providing cycle support to runners and other support roles along the course. We thoroughly enjoy this event, which shows that running is a great team sport as well as an individual sport. Our members also entered a team further afield in the Milton Keynes Marathon Relay in May. The weather was certainly cooler this year than it was last year and our members put in a great performance.

Our couch to 5k beginners programme was a success again this year. 37 runners have joined the programme and achieved their 5k goal! It’s hugely rewarding to see people come along with the determination to achieve their goals. We have several members who joined us after completing the couch to 5k programme and have gone on to develop as runners or just enjoy the friendly, social aspect that our club provides. Not everyone who completes the programme joins the club, the aim is to help people get what they want out of running.
